Here are 5 things inspiring me this month:

  1. My son’s artwork.

He is only 1.5 years old, but he loves to draw. I put down a fresh piece of paper and open a box of markers. He tells me what color he wants, I take off the cap, and he goes for it. Sometimes he makes little marks, sometimes he makes bold scribbles, and sometimes he makes intentional “lines” or “dots” across the page. Regardless, he is so free. He doesn’t care when I turn the page over and he has to start again. He just enjoys making something and moves on carefree when it’s complete. I’m really enjoying witnessing and remembering that energy.

2. On Instagram: Thomas Jackson @thomasjackson415

He is an installation photographer that recently created some dreamy scenes with various color fabrics and movements by the ocean. He shares this through beautiful photography and video on his Instagram page which gives me all the feels.

3. “The Motherhood of Art”

Each section in this book tells the story of a woman and how her role of mother has affected her art, and how her art has affected her as a mother. Over 30 women were asked various questions digging into this topic, and it’s helped me feel connected to the common thread in many of these stories. It is so comforting and enlightening to read other’s authentic feelings, experiences and tips on managing life as a mother artist.

4. This meme:

Just a reminder to not be so hard on myself! I will stay committed to my goals, but also tune into what will be most beneficial to me right now. Instead of pushing through, rest might be the thing I need to be refreshed and clear headed enough to come up with the creative solutions I’m seeking. And also, just because I may miss a day (or week or month) to complete a goal or resolution doesn’t mean I have to give it all up. I can start again–the work I did before matters, and the fact that I will continue on matters too.

5. I’m always reading a science book, so thought I’d share the latest as I’m sure it will influence my work in one way or another!

“Energy Medicine” is a very detailed scientific book that discusses the history and applications of various therapeutics developed through the understanding of electricity, magnetism, and even bio photons (light). I’ve been studying biophysics for many years, but this book is opening my eyes to both the bigger picture of why we’re not using these therapies more, and also to the minuscule details on why they actually work. It’s going to be long read, as it’s packed with information, but it’s a worthwhile venture to me.

It’s a little crazy how I am finding a parallel with how the author describes energy being transferred, transformed, and transmitted in the body, with how I imagine energy is moving through my body as I paint. I love it!
